OpenAI to start testing ads inside ChatGPT for U.S. users
OpenAI says it will begin testing ads inside ChatGPT in the U.S., with sponsored placements shown at the bottom of responses.
OpenAI said on Jan 16, 2026 it plans to begin testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
The test will apply to logged-in adults in the U.S. on the free tier and ChatGPT Go (OpenAI’s $8/month plan, now available in the U.S.). During the test, OpenAI says it won’t show ads in accounts where a user indicates—or OpenAI predicts—they are under 18.
OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscriptions won’t include ads.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Go includes image generation, file uploads, and memory as part of the lower-cost plan.
OpenAI says ads will show only when there’s a relevant sponsored product or service based on the current conversation, won’t run near sensitive or regulated topics like politics, health, or mental health, and won’t influence ChatGPT’s answers.
OpenAI says it doesn’t sell conversations to advertisers, and users can view why an ad appears, dismiss it, disable personalization, or clear ad-related data.
