Anthropic to pilot a Claude-powered assistant inside GOV.UK

Anthropic says it will work with the UK government to build and pilot an AI assistant for GOV.UK, starting with employment-related guidance for job seekers.

Today, Anthropic announced it has been selected by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to help build and pilot an AI assistant for GOV.UK.

  • The first rollout focus is employment support, aimed at helping people find work, locate training options, and get routed to the right government services based on their situation.
  • Anthropic says the assistant is powered by Claude and is designed to guide users through multi-step government processes, not just answer one-off questions.
  • The project follows DSIT’s “Scan, Pilot, Scale” approach, with testing and iteration planned before any wider expansion.
  • Anthropic engineers are expected to work alongside teams in the Government Digital Service, with an explicit goal of leaving the government able to operate and maintain the system itself.
  • Users are meant to control what the assistant remembers and can opt out of memory; Anthropic says personal data handling will align with UK data protection law.
